English is a passion of mine that I hope your children will be able to share! I don't anticipate on making this course overly challenging or beyond college-entry level -- I understand students have many classes a day that give out an abundance of homework. However, I do incorporate social justice issues into my teaching of literature, as I believe that most literature stems from them. The students will read some classic literature, and also will have their own Young Adult literature reading assignments a couple times throughout the year. I don't believe in busy work or pointless homework; I believe in discussion and thorough analysis of the literature. That being said, students will be responsible for doing all reading outside of class and I hope you will encourage them to do so! Reading can be fun and beneficial for high school students if they are able to connect to it, and my goal is to help each and every student connect-- in some way-- to what we read!

How to get students to fall in love with reading |
"Parents play a key role in preventing and responding to bullying. If you know or suspect that your child is involved in bullying, there are several resources that may help."

This article is something I believe in! I think this is helpful for parents for two reasons: 1. You can sort of see how I will be encouraging your children to read! 2. It provides you with tips on encouraging them! It doesn't take much, maybe offer to take them to the book store and let them pick out a book of their choice; encouragement can be simplistic!
